The winter of 2020 has presented itself as very mild, indeed many days seemed like we were in the middle of summer. As the tourist season is getting closer and closer, I utilized my free time to relax and recharge my batteries. Numerous walks in the city and its surroundings, night outings and excursions around Istria are the recorded contents with which now, in the form of a photo gallery, I'm updating my 'Pula Travel Guide'.
This former military complex, Monte Kope, is a small hill between Pula and Premantura that offers an unforgettable view of the Pomeranian and Medulin bay (pomerski zaljev and medulinski zaljev) with its many magical green islets. A great place for walks that during the spring, as a combination of pine forest and low vegetation, becomes a real goldmine of asparagus.
Near Pazin, circa hundred meters from the village Zarečki roof (Zarečki krov), Nature played with the imagination and created a cave similar to a roof over which the Pazinčica river generates a spectacular waterfall that flows into the gorgeous small lake.
A completely random encounter of generations. Benign and hospitable people gathered by the fire, talking about the good and less good old and prehistoric times. Enjoyment of profound peace and happiness, accompanied by massive portions of excellent local food and wine. All in all, a divine zero gravity experience more valuable than all the money in the world.
My next target this winter was Medulin, formerly a small fishing village and now one of Croatia's top tourist destinations. For me, the most beautiful thing in Medulin is Vižula peninsula. Vižula is a newly renovated archaeological park where people, during the walk of cca 2 km, can admire nature's beauty and ancient Roman monuments.
In the center of Istria, cca 50 km from Pula, lies the town of Pazin with its spectacular natural attraction: Pazin cave (Pazinska jama). The rocks of Pazinčica canyon, the longest Istrian subterranean river, are 200 meters high - below them is the entrance to a cave with two lakes, which the famous writer Jules Verne describes in his 1885 book 'Mathias Sandorf'.
Simply said, an aquatic paradise for water skiers and wakeboarders situated 3 km from the city center, right next to the campsite Stoja in the middle of the Valovine bay. Lenght 420 m, speed 30 km/h, obstacles 3.
Motovun is a small medieval fortified town located in the hilly area of central Istria, cca 70 km from Pula. Its name comes from the Celtic word Montona, that means a town in the hills. The two words that best describe it are the town monument.
Circa 30 km away from Pula, on the western coast of Istria - there's one of the most romantic places in the Mediterranean. With its 22 islands and islets, Rovinj is the strongest tourist center in Istria, and is also a city of extremely rich cultural and historical heritage.
Here I am on a visit to another tourist flower of the western coast of the Istrian peninsula, whose history dates back almost 2.000 years. Located cca 60 km from Pula, Poreč is today a city that balances very well between old traditions and challenges of the modern times.
Circa 10 km from Pula, just behind the small village Premantura, there is the Cape Kamenjak (Rt Kamenjak) Nature Park. If a Ferrari is made in Italy and Sony is made in Japan, then Kamenjak must be made in Heaven. Already a cult place for nature lovers, Cape Kamenjak is the southernmost point of the Istrian peninsula - approximately 30 km of beautiful coastline i.e. 400 hectares of pure virgin nature.
