Would you drive a similar wooden toy today? 'Balinjerada - Pula' (Istria - Croatia) is an adventure open to anyone who expresses an interest in participating.
This may surprise you, but the roots of playing with "karići" date back quite over 100 years! In those old days when the street was a children's playground, these funny road rockets built in neighbor's garage were almost all the entertainment boys and girls needed to be happy in life. In other words, "karić" was a simple and creative medicine for inability of workers' families to afford their kids expensive manufactured toys.
Held on sunday 17 February at Veli Vrh (suburb of Pula), this year 'Balinjerada 2019' was an exciting mixture of crazy soapbox vehicles (locally known as "karići") racing competition and a carnival masquerade parade. "Karić" is a self-made wooden scooter with steel ball bearings wheels that, while moving across the pavement, produces a noise similar to a F-16 Barak fighter jet. The name of the race 'Balinjerada' comes from "balinjere" - which is how ball bearings are called in this part of the world.
The race track of 'Pula - Balinjerada' starts at the top of downhill street 'Partizanski put', from where the ball bearing wooden scooters and other soapbox vehicles, by gaining quite acceleration, descend several hundred meters toward the finish line near the sea coast. Apart from being a super tourist attraction accompanied with music & food fiesta, 'Balinjerada - Pula' is at the same time a show where everyone has an equal opportunity to demonstrate their imagination, talent, creativity, courage and skills.
If you're eventually curious to learn more about this town, 'Apartment Romina - Pula' has prepared for that purpose an extensive Pula travel guide :)
